MATCH REPORT
Before the match talk was going round about changing the teams, but captain Elliot was confident his team could do a job and get a result. His confidence was well placed!
Brilliant 1st game at goals and it was a 7 goal thriller!
The Blues got off to a really good start being quite solid at the back and Nathan, who had an excellent first game back opened the scoring after making a marauding run down the wing and finishing expertly to give them a 1 goal lead.
The Reds then took control of the ball and held most of the possession. The Blues were over-run in midfield and the Reds definately started imposing thier game. The pressure caught up on the Blues and mis-communcation between Andy and Ryan meant Ryan headed into an empty net as Andy had come out for the ball. 1-1.
The second mistake came when Andy was looking for a quick counter attack and threw the ball straight to Mike, who pinged it into the net with the outside of his foot. A gift presented to Mike who happily accepted it. 2-1 Reds.
The Blues were struggling to get the ball out of thier half at this point and they kept giving it away. The Reds then deservedly took the lead with a nicely worked goal and took up a 3-1 lead.
Tommy admirably suggested swapping positions with Balf and this turned the game on its head. Tommy was excellent at left back with his usually good distribution. Balf increased the work-rate in the middle and the Blues looked like a different team. They looked dangerous on the break with Elliots pace and John & Balf linking up well.
The Blues finally got thier rewards for some good link up play with Elliot scoring an excellent goal to reduce the deficit to 1 goal.
The Reds were still knocking the ball around nicely but they were too reliant on Mike for providing the goals. The midfielders seemed to create space for themselves but fail to shoot and test the goalkeeper. The Blues on the other hand were shooting at every available opportunity but found Ste in good form making some quality saves.
A big moment in the game came when the equaliser was scored, which in Balfs own words, was a “screamer”. 3 each and a huge last 20 minutes for either team to search out for a winner.
Elliots pace was continuing to create chances for the Blues, and Balfs hold up play up front was excellent. John was also helping out with the defending, it was a real team effort. Ryan was also defending brilliantly for the Blues and did an excellent job keeping Mike and Dim quietish.
The Blues kept pressing and eventually their 4th goal came thanks to a deflected Elliot shot. 10 mins for the Blues to hang on to what would be a shock result.
The defending then became frantic from the Blues. Tommy, Ryan and Nath were putting in some last ditch tackle and the attackers were working like crazy to help out.
But a moment of rare slack defending and Mike found himself through 1 on 1 with Andy. Mike did everything right and shot to a corner, but Andy who had already committed to the other side managed to react well and dangle a leg out to make a huge save and redeem himself from his earlier error.
It just seemed like it was going to be the Blues day and they managed to see out the remaining minutes and take away a marverlous win. The Reds were stunned but they were outworked and the hard graft paid off. Great win blues roll on next week! π΅π΅
