All will be revealed in gameweek 4!

Teams chosen by Al and Balf this week. Let’s have a great game lads!

TEAMS

MATCH REPORT

Last week saw one team thrash the other, but this week it was a much tighter affair.

In the opening 45 minutes goals were really hard to come by, defences were very much on top and both teams stuck men behind the ball when they didn’t have possession. Goals only came with a bit of individual brilliance or well worked team goals.

A contentious decision in the game seemed to spark some fight into some of the players. One of the Reds had a shot where we really could have done with VAR! Several players argued whether or not the ball crossed the line, as usual keeper Ian’s shout was final and was ruled no goal. Guess we will never know what really happened!

Although it’s still early in the season, this felt like a big game. Things started getting a little bit tasty with some aggressive tackles flying in, some dubious foul shouts and a few cheeky ankle taps. (We all know who 😂)

The pressure of the game was certainly ramped up a notch and this caused a few cracks to appear in the Blues defence. A period of 10 minutes settled the game where a few big mistakes from the Blues gave Tony B some half chances from tight angles, and guess what, he buried every single one of them.

More frustration occurred for the Blues as they started to get more shots off, but Pete in goal for the Reds pulled off some majestic saves at key moments to keep their noses in front.

The Reds had a 3 goal cushion now and it was a case of game management to seal the win. With experienced heads of Tommy and Alan in their side who both had quality performances, the Reds organised themselves superbly and got the 3 points. It was one of them games for the Blues, they really struggled to get shots off, let alone goals and it wasn’t to be .

Much tighter this week but the better team Reds shaded it with just a little bit more quality than the Blues. Well played Reds.

MAN OF THE MATCH

With 8 votes Tony Blackhurst is this week’s MOTM. He led the line brilliantly for the Reds and never got frustrated despite the lack of clear cut chances. Work rate was first class, scored the vital goals and ultimately was the difference to earn a Red victory. Well played Tony.

Remaining votes went to:

Pete with 2

Tommy with 1

Ryan with 1

KEY STATS

The Alan juggernaut goes marching on with 4 impressive wins from 4!

Tommy moves up to his highest ever position of 4th in the league, now a contender!

Reining champion Ryan is now only 3 points from top spot, can he make it back to back titles?

Another loss for Nathan means only his appearance points are keeping him off the bottom, he’ll be desperate for that elusive win next week!

Balf and Alan lead the way at the top with their 100% records, but with both being captains today which one will carry on their fine form?

Hope it’s a cracker lads enjoy the match!

TEAMS

MATCH REPORT

Week 3 was looking at being a good one with Al and balf looking to stay top.

From the off reds set the pace banging in 2 well worked goals. But this didn’t last as the blues were quick to reply with 2 blammys from vanspall pulling the blues back into the game.

From then on it was back and forth with goals both ends of the pitch.
Tony G emptied the loose change out of his pockets from the previous week to make room for Tony B who just couldn’t seem to find his shooting boots.

With some flicks and tricks from dim leaving the reds defence in awe the blues started to pull ahead.
Even with Tommy’s edge of the box goal slotted home and Balfs absolute worldy it wasn’t enough to stop the rot.

With some quality defending from Al, blocking shots left right and centre even one with his spuds 😂 and Pete pulling out save after save like a cat on red bull. The blues were off and there was no stopping goal after goal from Ian, Dim and Ryan.

With the game finishing with 11 goals between them the blues took a well deserved win.

Alan took his troops into battle again coming out victorious leaving him still undefeated.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Dim well deserved motm with 9 votes as his work rate on and off the ball an finishing gave the blues the advantage they needed to take the win. Well in dim 👏🏻

Remaining votes went to:

Ryan with 2

Pete with 1

KEY STATS

Alan remains top with a perfect 100% record. Look away now Nathan as unfortunately you have a terrible 0% record, sure he will look to put that right next week.

With 2 wins from 3 Ryan once again is in great form and looking to retain his title. Early days though.

With 9 votes Dim sets the record for the most votes in one week, almost a clean sweep!

LEAGUE TABLE

SEASON 2 – 14TH APRIL 2019 – GAMEWEEK 2

Welcome to Sunday League Football.

MATCH PREVIEW

2nd game of the season and it’s still early days and all to play for.

A few are away on holiday this week so Andy and Tony are filling in. We also welcome back regulars Tommy and Dim who will be itching to put in a good performance.

Big Al and Andy have picked the teams this week, all that’s left is to play football.

Let’s have a great game lads!

TEAMS

MATCH REPORT

Compared to previous games, this was one of the lowest scoring we have had in the league. But in terms of excitement, this was one of the best.

For 30 minutes the match was extremely tight with no more than a goal in it. Both teams were defending very well and when goals came, it was because they were unstoppable shots or really well worked moves.

The game was won in a 10 minute spell where the Blues made 3 or 4 mistakes in their defending and the Reds made them pay with some superb finishing notably from Balf and Elliot.

The Reds now had a 4 goal cushion and started to put men behind the ball defending. A tactical change for the Blues meant Boss or Ryan were sitting in the middle and this dragged the Blues back into the game.

The front two of Dim and John for the Blues had chance after of chance, and on another day could have easily scored 10 between them. But they only a few but this brought the Blues only a single goal behind.

At this point the Reds hit the Blues on the counter with a returning Tommy skinning a few defenders and laying it off for a brilliant well worked goal that gave them a 2 goal cushion.

The Blues hit straight back and again the lead was down to 1 goal with 10 minutes remaining.

The Blues threw the kitchen sink for the time left with wave after wave of attacks. But with Ste and Alan once again defending brilliantly, and an injured Elliot in goal making two wonder saves, they held on for the win.

It was a cracker of a match with it going down to the wire, but the Reds take home the spoils. Well played lads let’s hope every week is this close.

MAN OF THE MATCH

With 4 votes each theres a joint MOTM for Ste and Balf.

Ste was like a Rolls Royce at the back this week and had a more calmer demeanor than usual, but still had that no nonsense defending about him. Had a superb game and made some quality tackles especially the last 10 mins.

Balf was clinical with his shooting this week. Had limited chances but put most of them away and surely earned his team the 3 points. As always put in a great shift.

Both worthy MOTM performances this week. Well done lads

Remaining votes went to:

Elliot with 2

Tommy with 1

Ryan with 1

KEY STATS

With 2 victories in 2 games this season Alan already has the same amount of wins as the whole as last season!

Balf, Alan and Martin remain the only undefeated players this season.

Balf and Alan are next weeks captains to pick teams!

LEAGUE TABLE

SEASON 2 – 7TH APRIL 19 – GAMEWEEK 1

Welcome to Sunday League Football.

MATCH PREVIEW

After a brilliant 1st season everyone is keen to do another one so here we are first day of season 2!

You all know how it works now, same rules, same points system as before. Only difference is the top 2 in the league will decide teams each week between themselves.

It’s a clean slate for all players now, everyone is a contender and as Ryan proved last season you will be up there if you win most of your games. Some people have a point to prove, some want to carry on their fine form.

All I know is Sunday League Football is back and let’s make it another cracker! Let’s have a good game lads!

TEAMS

MATCH REPORT

This was a very similar game to the last game of season 1.

To start off with the game was pretty evenly matched, the Reds were sitting back whilst the Blues enjoyed some possession and it looked like it was going to be a close game.

Elliot started with bundles of energy and he scored some decent early goals but the Reds took full advantage of their chances and kept up to the Blues.

After about 20 minutes the game changed. The Reds were absolutely clinical with their chances with Balf, Martin and John having their shooting boots on. This seemed to really frustrate the Blues as everything seemed to be against them and every chance was finished off by the Reds.

Backed up with a brilliant defensive partnership of Alan and Ryan, the Reds didnt conceed many shots on goal, nevermind any goals as they were tackling and blocking everything the Blues threw at them. When the few shots did get through Andy was making some saves, again to the frustration of the Blues.

After building up a healthy lead the Reds did ease off towards the end and this allowed the Blues to create some good chances and have a sniff of a comeback. To their credit they kept pushing but with the injury to Bryan and disruption to the team, it just wasnt going to be their day.

The Reds to a man all played pretty well and worked well as a team. They pick up the first win of the season. Still a long way to go and plenty of points to play for.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Andy received 6 votes and is this weeks man of the match. Pulled off some good saves at crucial times. Alan should feel unlucky not to be MOTM this week as he was pretty awesome at the back and deserves a special mention.

The remaining votes went to:

Alan with 5

Martin with 1 (thanks Tommy)

Balf with 1

KEY STATS

Alan has received the highest amount of votes in a gameweek without being MOTM.

Balf scored over half of the Reds goals but only received 1 vote, again he might feel unlucky not to receive more

LEAGUE TABLE

24TH MAR 19 – GAMEWEEK 10

Welcome to Sunday League Football.

MATCH PREVIEW

Can you believe it, it’s the final day of the season! What a brilliant 1st season it’s been, and a personal thanks from me for getting on board with it, it’s been great fun and hope you have all enjoyed it.

Ian and Ryan are playing today for the title and either one would be worthy winners. The rest of us will be hoping for a win to give us confidence and momentum going into the next game.

The top two have picked the teams (seen below), let’s have a brilliant match lads!

TEAMS

MATCH REPORT

For the first 20 minutes both teams were feeling each other out and it was quite cagey. Ryan and Ian knew this was a big game so both were organising their team and trying to dictate play.

The game settled down and it has to be said, the Blues put on a 6 a side masterclass. For about 20 minutes the Blues didn’t conceded a goal thanks to some awesome defending from Alan and Ryan, backed up with some fine saves from the keeper. With Martin, Elliot and John linking up beautifully the Blues soon had a comfortable lead.

At this point it would have been easy for the Blues to get complacent, but they kept pilling the pressure on the Reds and they really didn’t have an answer. Martin seemed to score every time he got the ball and his work rate was phenomenal.

There was a small window of opportunity for the Blues, particularly when they won a penalty. Ian the captain, stepped up and tried playing mind games with the goalkeeper by staring him out, but in the end he hit it into row Z and this kind of summed up the Reds performance.

Another highlight was John dazzling Balf with his fancy footwork and leaving him for dead. The other players didn’t know whether to clap or laugh. Was a brilliant bit of play.

It was a comfortable win for the Blues and a 3 goal difference in the scoreline flattered the Reds. It was probably the best team performance of the season and one that will take some topping.

What a fantastic first season it has been, everyone has upped their game and it has certainly made Sunday football one of the highlights of the week. Well done lads.

MAN OF THE MATCH

You could have picked any of the Blues this week, but with 6 votes Martin is this weeks MOTM. He epitomized the Blues this week, work rate first class, defending and covering first class and scoring 10+ goals, first class!! A complete midfielders match. Superb game martin possibly a contender for performance of the season well done mate.

The remaining votes went to:

Alan with 3

Boss with 3

LEAGUE 1 CHAMPION

This season’s champion is Ryan with 7 wins and only 1 defeat. He has been quite simply brilliant in defence all season, not only in his play but also been a leader for whichever team he has been in. Some might say the “Scouse Cafu” with his bombing runs forward. Congratulations Ryan great season.

KEY STATS

Elliot has the most votes this season with an impressive 18, will definitely be a contender next season.

Ryan has averaged 3.6 points per game this season.

Boss has the worst record in the league with 7 loses, however a win at the end of this season will give him confidence for next season.

LEAGUE TABLE

17TH MAR 19 – GAMEWEEK 9

Welcome to Sunday League Football.

MATCH PREVIEW

It’s the penultimate game of the season and it promises to be an exciting finish to the season. The top 2 Ian and Ryan go head to head this week and a win for either could well be crucial in the race for Season 1 champion!

John, Balf and Ste have an outside chance of getting top spot but will surely need 2 wins and man of the match performances! As for the rest of us we are now playing for pride, bragging rights (of which i have none) and of course the enjoyment of the beautiful game.

Teams have been picked by Josh this week, see below for confirmation.

Let’s have a great game lads!

TEAMS

MATCH REPORT

In terms of pressure and excitement, this week was definately one of the best games of the season so far for the first hour.

Early in the game both teams defences were on top. Organised and defending in numbers made it difficult for the strikers and when goals came they were all well worked.

Martins runs from defence was causing all sorts of problems to the Reds defence, including a wonderful chip from Ian which Martin banged in. However this was leaving space behind him and with the pacey attack of Elliot and Dim they eventually started to make inroads in the game and find themselves in 2v2 and 2v1 situations which they duly punished the Blues with some excellent goals.

John was again the target man up front for the Blues, and with Ian and Jon making darting runs to support him the Blues were a real threat.

The match was still finely poised and Ste came out from goal which made the Blues more solid again and with 20 minutes to go it was there for the taking for either team.

Big players turn up in the big games and Elliot started to run the show in the last part of the game. He started to make his dribbling runs with the ball and create many opportunities, the Blues struggled to keep up his his speed. With Dim playing a great supporting role up top for the Reds this proved to be the difference in the overall result.

Unfortunately for the Blues they had no plan B and when the support to John up front dried up, the Blues ran out of ideas and this will be one that got away. Was a really good game lads and the best team won.

MAN OF THE MATCH

With 8 votes Elliot takes this weeks MOTM. When Elliot has his shooting boots on like he did this week he’s unplayable. Pace, skill and finishing was top notch. His goals at the crucial moments in the game earned his team the win. Well played Elliot 2 bonus points in the bag.

KEY STATS

Mathematically, it’s now a two horse race for Season 1 winner between Ian and Ryan. The permutations are:

If Ian wins next week, he’s champion.

If Ryan wins next week, he’s champion unless Ian win’s the MOTM in which case Ian would then still take top spot.

If the match is a draw, Ian is champion unless Ryan wins MOTM in which case Ryan would then take top spot.

Hope that clarifies matters!

LEAGUE TABLE

10TH MAR 19 – GAMEWEEK 8

Welcome to Sunday League Football.

MATCH PREVIEW

Gameweek 8 and things are really hotting up in the title race!

Ian has top spot but there are still quite a few people who can catch him realistically, although if you talk to Bryan he still thinks he can pull off a miracle!

Its also tight in mid table as some people will be looking to finish the season strong and gain some confidence and of course, bragging rights!

This week sees the return of Ryan, Alan, Elliot and Martin so expect them to be fresh and raring to go as the season enters the final 3 games. Welcome back lads! Let’s have a great game!

TEAMS

MATCH REPORT

With teams eventually made the game started brightly for the Blues having several chances to put themselves on top, but they were wasteful in front of goal and expended a lot of energy trying to hit the Reds on the counter attack.

The Reds then started to dominate the play and began to score at will. With John holding his position up top, the Reds always had an outlet and the Blues struggled to contain him. Elliot was trying his best to get things going for the Blues but unfortunately the rest of his team had nothing left in the tank to support him fully.

It was one way traffic and the highlight of the Reds play was a long ball over the top which Balf smashed on the volley into the top corner, was a peach of a goal and one I’m sure we will hear about many times.

The Blues kept the match respectable with their effort but the Reds had too much energy and quality in this match. On paper it was an easy win for the Reds and so it proved true. 3 points for the Red team well played lads.

MAN OF THE MATCH

With 4 votes John gets man of the match for the 2nd game in a row! He picked up where he left off from last week playing up top and proving to be a nuisance with his runs along the line. John was a provider for his teammates all match and scored a few quality goals too. Great game well played John.

The remaining votes went to:

Dim with 1

Ian with 1

Bryan with 1

Balf with 1

Martin with 1

Elliot with 1

Boss with 1

Ryan with 1

KEY STATS

John is the only player with 2 man of the match awards this season, definitely a contender for the season 1 champion!

It is now mathematically impossible for Bryan to win the league with 2 games to go.

Ian and Ryan have the most wins and take up the top spots in the league. Surely they will go head to head next week!

LEAGUE TABLE

3RD MAR 2019 – GAMEWEEK 7

Welcome to Sunday League Football.

MATCH PREVIEW

We are now well and truly in the business end of the season and this is definitely the biggest game so far.
With Ryan, Josh and Elliot away this week, there’s a real opportunity for Ian and Jon to put themselves in the driving seat for that top spot. It also gives a lifeline for those in mid-table to try and sneak into contention; with 4 games left it’s still possible!

A few season debuts also this week with the return of the Tony’s!

Looking forward to this one lads let’s have a great game!

TEAMS

MATCH REPORT

This was definitely a game of two halves.

The first 30 minutes it was anyone’s game. With both teams having a permanent goalkeeper the teams could set up their positions and organise the shape, both sides were initially solid in defence and goals were at a premium. The scoreline was evens going into the second half and really the game was there for someone to step up and take the game.

The battle in midfield was certainly crucial to the overall result. More and more space was becoming available for the Reds and they took advantage. Tony, Ian and John began to dictate play and get more and more possession. The goals then stared to flow for the Reds and the Blues really started to lose their shape and conceed silly goals.

The Blues stopped working and were outnumbered on several attacks, this spell of 20 or so minutes really cost them the 3 points.

It was then a case of game management for the Reds as they just cruised along. Every time the Blues scored and had a sniff of a comeback, the Reds would respond straight away and never really looked like they were going to lose this one.

It was a great win for the Reds and fully deserved, the Blues will be annoyed they let this one slip too easily.

As for the title race Ian opens up a nice gap, but Ryan will look to close the gap next week and there’s still a few who could cause a surprise for the Sunday League title. Roll on next week!

MAN OF THE MATCH

With 5 votes each John and Tony B take this week’s MOTM. John rolled back the years with some great hold and link up play. He assured his team mates all game and scored goals at crucial times during the match. Tony came back to Sunday football and there was no hint of rust at all. He was sharp all game and his quick feet and deadly finishing was really punishing to the opposition. Well played both!

The remaining votes went to:

Ian with 1

Pete with 1

KEY STATS

Nathan has one of the best records in the league this season only losing once from six games, however has only received 1 vote all season, underated?

Pete has played 2 lost 2 but has received a vote in each game, he has obviously kept the scoreline respectable for his teams.

LEAGUE TABLE

24TH FEB 2019 – GAMEWEEK 6

Welcome to Sunday League Football.

MATCH PREVIEW

Some massive games going on today, but none more so than Sunday League Football in Bootle Stadium!

Half way through the season and there are a few players who are contending to be the champion and a few others who still have time to make their move.

As Ryan has proved, wins is the name of the game, who can stop him?

Let’s have a great game lads!

TEAMS

MATCH REPORT

Another really close and tense game this week, especially towards the end of the game.

In the first half the match was extremely even with goals being scored by both teams. The Blues probably just edged it with John, Richie and Dim linking up really well up top and scoring some well worked goals.

The Blues worked up a 3 goal lead and for some reason slacked off and tactically lost momentum. The 3 attacking players for the Blues tended to stay forward which left a massive hole in the middle of the park. This left the Reds to pick apart the Blues as Balf, Danny and Ian found themselves 2v1 or 3v2 on numerous occasions and they punished some slack defending.

It has to be said also for all his chat before the game, Bryan came up with one of the goals of the season with a magnificent volley into the bottom corner. The momentum was well and truly in the Reds favour and they found themselves 4 goals up.

The Blues then bucked their ideas up and had a midfielder sat in the middle of the park, which meant the Reds couldnt create chances at will as they had done previously. The Blues had several chances but Ste and Josh defended really well and limited the goals.

In the end the Blues got to within 1 goal but they just ran out of time. They pleaded for more time but the Reds were always going to take the 3 points.

It felt like a massive game in the context of the title race, there really are a number of players who could win it now. Time will tell if this loss has cost Ryan the title, but it was another really good game lads well played all, roll on next week!

For clarification, if 2 people are on the same number of points, the person with the most MOTM awards will be placed higher, after this it’s actual number of votes, after this it’s number of victories. Could be crucial with 4 games to go so wanted to make this clear to everyone.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Unanimously Josh was voted your man of the match this week with 7 votes. He did a proper defenders job making great tackles time after time, blocking shots and heading the ball clear. Josh even chipped in with a couple of goals! He definitely played a crucial role in earning the 3 points for the Reds, excellent game well played Josh.

The remaining votes went to:

Danny with 2

Balf with 1

Ste with 1

Ryan with 1

KEY STATS

It’s the first gameweek Ian hasn’t picked up any votes, but ironically he goes to the top of the league!

Nathan and Ryan lose their unbeaten record, Bryan finally gets his first win if you haven’t already heard!

LEAGUE TABLE

17TH FEB 2019 – GAMEWEEK 5

Welcome to Sunday League Football.

MATCH PREVIEW

Gameweek 5 is upon us and already this means we are half way through the season after today’s match.

Hope everyone’s enjoying it so far. One man who certainly is enjoying it is Ryan who remains top of the league after last week’s bizarre results, will he have his first loss of the season today or will he chalk up another win?

A bit of chopping and changing this week with a few regulars missing, but even Chelmsford isn’t going to stop Ian from playing after his private jet back to Liverpool in time for the game!

Remember players shout for fouls, accept it and keep the game flowing 🙂

Let’s have a great game lads!

TEAMS

MATCH REPORT

After last week’s dogfight, this was a much better game quality-wise. Probably the best game of the season.

The initial period of the game was extremely tight with no team building up any sizeable lead and the game at 4 a piece. There were some quality goals scored, notably Dim and Jon linking beautifully for a slick goal, and Martin with a lovely swivel and finish.

The Blues then went 6-4 up and were worthy of the lead with a high work rate from Elliot, Danny and Martin. Also Pete made some fine saves and organised the defence well.

Then perhaps the most crucial moment of the game, Martin picked up a niggle which forced him to the sidelines for 15 minutes. The Blues then lacked the energy in the middle of the park and the Reds took full advantage. Ian then started to spray the ball about and Dim found himself in possession more often. The Reds scored 3 goals in a row to put their noses in front, including the defence splitting assist from Ian.

The Blues piled on the pressure towards the end of the match but their finishing escaped them with several chances missed and in the end the Reds took home the 3 points with a slender lead.

Both defences must take some credit from the game as it was a low scoring game and the defenders were excellent.

MAN OF THE MATCH

After receiving votes in every match so far Ian finally takes man of the match this week with 3 votes. It seemed to be a pre-meditated game plan from Ian this week to pass the ball more and try and dictate play, which he did extremely effectively. More assists this week but also let fly with that dangerous left foot a few times to help earn his team the win. Well played Ian.

The remaining votes were:

Jon with 2

Ryan with 2

Pete with 2

Josh with 1

Dim with 1

Danny with 1

Nathan with 1

KEY STAT

Nathan and Ryan remain the only 2 unbeaten players in the league. 4 players are still without a win.

Ian is averaging 2 votes per game and sits only 3 points off the top, will he dare to face Ryan next week and de-throne him?
